What You Need to Know About Flood Insurance

Unfortunately, the start of June means the start of hurricane season. If you live or are looking to buy in an area that is prone to flooding, there are a few things they should do to make sure your home is ready in the event of a major storm. Chat with your Realtor or insurance carrier about hurricane-readiness and make sure you have flood insurance if your home is in a flood zone – your Realtor can tell you if you’re considering purchasing a home in a flood zone.

  1. If your home is in a flood zone, you’re already required to carry flood insurance on your home. As hurricane season approaches, you should familiarize yourselves with their flood insurance policies and organize all your insurance paperwork (flood and homeowners insurance) in one place.
  2. Make sure to check your windows and doors for cracks and leaks. During a storm is not the time you want to find a leak – properly seal windows and doors. This can also make your homes more energy efficient throughout the year.
  3. Clean your gutters and drains a few times a year, before hurricane season, this spring cleaning to-do list item is extra important. Having clean gutters and drains will help prevent all of the extra water that comes in with a storm from collecting.
  4. A few other things you should look out for in preparation for hurricane season include:
    • Removing debris from around the home
    • Adding surge protection, especially to your heating and air conditioning systems and expensive electronics like TV and computers
    • Covering air conditioning units to protect it from projectile objects
    • Examining the outside of the home and make any noticeable repairs
